There are many types of drugs, illegal and prescription, which are getting over used and abused. These drugs can take a toll on the person who is abusing them. The drugs change the way the brain works and a person who uses drugs on a regular basis may never be able to completely recover or repair the damage done to the brain. That is why it is important to spread the word about the dangers of drug use and addiction in hopes of preventing teens and adolescents from trying them in the first place.

There are many reasons why people choose to take drugs in the first place and environment and social factors play a key role. People take drugs to escape from reality and feel good because they might have a hard time dealing with life the way it is. Some people may just use drugs to experiment and never use them again, while others enjoy the feeling so much they continue to use them at a dangerous pace.

With all the news about the dangers of prescription drugs – especially opioid painkillers like OxyContin, methadone and morphine – you would think people would be using less of them. However, judging by the statistics, including the number of people going to drug detox and rehab centers to stop taking these drugs, it would appear that people are taking even more than ever. Do people really realize what these drugs can do?

According to a February, 2007 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, the weekly digest published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), unintentional poisoning deaths in the U.S. rose 62.5 percent from 1999-2004. According to CDC studies, this increase has been going on since the 1990’s and overdoses of prescription drugs, especially prescription painkillers, are primarily responsible for the increase. In fact, according to the CDC, opioid prescription painkillers cause more drug overdose deaths than cocaine and heroin combined.

The thing that makes these drugs so dangerous as opposed to cocaine or heroine is the fact that these drugs are prescribed by a doctor. Now don’t make the mistake and point the finger at the doctor as many of these drugs are medical miracles and truly do help people cope with chronic pain and other ailments. The problem is that the nature of these drugs are very addictive in nature and without proper monitoring of ones self you can change from becoming dependent on the drugs to being completely addicted to them.

Addiction is easy because the doctor may raise your dosage to help you cope with your illness. Well if you raise the dosage you will feel greater withdrawal symptoms in between dosages and end up taking pills in between dosage times just to cope. These extra dosages grow and grow until you have to be on these pills all the time. Well at this point your body builds up a tolerance to the drug and you start taking more.

According to National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services there are anywhere between 40-60,000 people in a treatment center a month in Texas alone. Now, that is a lot of people struggling with some form of drug abuse. Among that number we see that around 27-30% of those in treatment centers are teenagers. I think it is safe to say that we are living among a generation that is affected by the use of some form of substance. It is hard for any teen to not know a family member or friend that has either used or is using some from of drug.

Another report by SAS output, another government organization, showed that the only other age group that had a higher percentage of users then those ranging from 12-17 years old were those who were between 20-30 years old. Which is scary to think about, since this is probably a result or continuation of teenagers abusing drugs well after they enter adulthood.

Over 80% of Fortune 500 corporations now test for illicit drug use before hiring an employee. According to a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration, however, potential applicants who currently use drugs are more likely to apply to smaller companies and hope they aren’t doing background checks.

This same study reports that 1 in 12 full-time workers between the age of 18-64 have used illegal drugs in the past month. This kind of substance abuse costs businesses thousands of dollars every year mostly because these employees are 1/3 less productive and are absent on average five days per month more due to drug use. They are also four times more likely to be involved in a workplace accident and file a worker’s compensation claim. That doesn’t even begin to cover how they affect other employees and raise the level of workplace violence.

Although smoking is best known for causing lung cancer, this habit is also among the biggest threats to your skin. Next to sun and chemicals, tobacco is one of the major accelerators of your skin natural aging process, and it is thought to be one of the fastest acting threats. Young people start showing signs of early skin aging after as little as 10 years of smoking. If you think this is a long period of time, you should keep in mind that many young people start smoking in their teen years (16-19 year olds) and are still below 30 when the first signs appear.

Smoking causes the narrowing of blood vessels throughout your body, including those that supply the outermost layers of the skin with oxygen and nutrients. Thus, your skin is slowly starved of vital oxygen and other substances, such as immunity-boosting Vitamin A. Alcohol has a similar effect by destroying the body supply of Vitamin A. This will lower the role of skin as the first line of defense against bacteria and infections.

One thing which I have realized while looking deeper into drug addiction is that there are so many people who are fascinated by pictures of drug addicts and drug addiction stories. It is only now that I have been doing a lot more research on this field that I think I might truly understand why this is.

You see, the people who are doing the searches for these pictures of drug addicts and their stories are not actually the substance abusers themselves, but more their families and loved ones. It gives them a base line on which to judge the severity of their loved ones problem.
